New Dawn Women’s Suffrage Brooch
By Sally Lees
Description
Celebrate Women's Suffrage with this beautiful Limited Edition Brooch
This limited edition brooch is part of a collection of jewellery commissioned by The Houses of Parliament shops inspired by and to accompany the ‘New Dawn’ light sculpture installed in Westminster Hall in 2016 to celebrate women’s suffrage.
The brooch is limited edition and the aluminium disks were designed to represent the parlimentary scrolls, echoing the glass disks in ‘New Dawn’. It is constructed from polished aluminium printed and dyed by hand in all of the colours of the women’s suffrage organisations.
Colours distinguished the many suffrage organisations with the most recognised being green, purple and white. Green signifies hope, purple - dignity and white - purity. The brooch also includes yellow from the Women’s Freedom League and red from Millicent Fawcetts’s National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies.
Each brooch is unique due to its hand-made nature and is made using traditional riveting methods and modern dying techniques. The dyed aluminium and hand printed imagery varies from piece to piece giving you a beautifully hand crafted piece of art jewellery to treasure forever.
The New Dawn jewellery collection is featured on Sally's website including earrings and a statement New Dawn pendant made for the 2018 Voice and Vote exhibition at The Houses of Parliament.

The Story of the 'New Dawn' Brooch commission
Sally Lees was commissioned in 2016 to create a collection of jewellery to accompany the installation of 'New Dawn' a light sculpture by Mary Branson to celebrate women's suffrage. The collection was recommissioned with some new pieces for the Vote 100 exhibition at Westminster Hall in 2018.
The imagery on this brooch is inspired by the Parliamentary scrolls on which The Representation of the People's Act, that gave some women the right to vote was written on.
