Craftmakers in Residence
Bringing together nine selected makers from QEST (the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust) and Cockpit, Craftmakers in Residence is an exciting opportunity to witness artisans in action and gain a deeper understanding of how one-of-a-kind designs are made. Meet them in person and see their incredible work up close, from embroidery and hand painting to mosaic, woodworking and letter carving. Transforming an idea into reality takes skill, imagination and vision; from revitalising heritage techniques and cutting-edge innovation to seeing the potential of materials and artisan processes.
Cockpit participants 2023
Four makers in residence at Cockpit will demonstrate their remarkable skills. They include Karen Henriksen, who will be using her millinery skills to create handcrafted lampshades, and Kamilah Ahmed whose embroidered and hand wrapped textiles merge digital processes with heritage craft techniques. She will draw on her experiences working with fashion brands such as Christian Dior, McQueen and Valentino. Hannah Galvin Horne is an artist specialising in decorative leather surfaces, reinventing historic processes used in bookbinding and illuminated manuscripts in a contemporary context. Breathing new life into materials destined for landfill, Alicia Rowbotham reimagines by-products from the UK textile manufacturing industry to create objects, including wall pieces for today’s spaces.
