Six new makers have joined Cockpit just in time for Summer Open Studios

Meet the NEW FACES of Cockpit! We’ve had six exciting new makers and Awardees join our community since the beginning of this year. From glass sculptors to felting artists to classical guitar makers, you won’t want to miss a visit to these up-and-coming makers during Summer Open Studios.

Discover Open Studios exclusives at both Bloomsbury and Deptford

Open Studios is the perfect time to discover the latest work by our makers. To give you a small taste of what to expect, in Bloomsbury you’ll have an exclusive opportunity to purchase a limited-edition Irenie Studio x Eva the Weaver blanket. Made using deadstock Kvadrat textiles and yarns in Irenie’s signature pop colours, Eva has created a set of tactile weavings and stitched them onto the blankets as a colourful overlay.

In Deptford, bespoke leather garment designer Ella Boucht will be launching a series of new bags, developed using leftover leather scraps and off-cuts in a sustainable design process. Although Ella isn’t able to join us in person this summer, their new bags will be on sale for the first time during the weekend of Open Studios on their website.

Candice Lau has been made a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Leathersellers

Sculptor and award-winning leatherworker Candice Lau was recently recognised for her mastery of the craft by one of London’s oldest livery companies. Candice has long been challenging the expectations of leatherwork, breaking convention by creating works of art that transform her craft.

For Summer Open Studios, you’ll have the chance to see several of her works on display as part of our Cockpit Edit exhibition, as well discovering new pieces in her studio.

Enrich your London Gallery Weekend experience and meet the makers at Cockpit

Three of our makers have been hard at work creating new works for solo or duo exhibitions during London Gallery Weekend, which you’ll have a chance to experience for free (before your visit to Open Studios, of course).

If you’re in South London, be sure to stop by Corvi-Mora to visit Matthew Warner‘s solo exhibition of new ceramic work, his first with the gallery. East Enders — and textile enthusiasts — will want to see Woo Jin Joo‘s exhibition of playful textile sculptures at Ai, also featuring work by Molly Burrows.

And finally, you won’t want to miss Lucille Lewin‘s exhibition of intricately imagined worlds made in clay, metal, sea wrack, fossils, antique objects, and precious stones, presented by Tristan Hoare alongside work by Romilly Saumarez Smith.

You can meet Matthew and Woo Jin in their studios at Deptford next weekend (get tickets here) and Lucille in Bloomsbury this weekend (book now).

Source the perfect bespoke Father's Day gift from Jennie Adamson

Cockpit ceramicist Helen Johannessen has been working with Swedish illustrator Petra Boner on the main artwork for the newly refurbished Montcalm hotel in Mayfair. After three years of discussions, fabrication, casting, carving, refining and finally framing, the artwork has finally been installed in its permanent home!

The hand carved piece — which  measures 2.5 x 1.5 metres and is the largest piece Helen has ever made in plaster — hangs suspended from the ceiling in the reception area, providing an inspiring welcome for guests.

Not only will Helen’s work be available to purchase in our Craft Week exhibition, she will also be doing a porcelain casting demonstration in her studio on Wednesday 14 May at 12.30 pm. Book your space here.

Treat your dad to a creative experience at one of Anja Lubach's ceramics workshops

From wheel throwing taster workshops for absolute beginners to intensive one-to-one sessions for more intermediate potters, Anja Lubach‘s ceramics workshops make the perfect Father’s Day gift for crafty dads.

And finally, don't miss our first-ever live bronze pour during Deptford Open Studios

As part of the VIP Preview on Friday 13 June at Cockpit Deptford, one of our resident sculptors Jasmine Bradbury will be doing two live bronze pours at 3 pm and 4 pm.

Together with the team at Coles Casting, Jasmine will demonstrate the process of using molten bronze to cast sculptures and other objects using a pre-prepared ceramic mould.

Secure your VIP Tickets to attend.
