About

Oriel Zinaburg completed his RIBA degree at the Architectural Association School of Architecture and worked as an Architect before setting up his ceramic studio in 2019. He uses his background in architecture to create bold, organic and ceramics.

Process

Oriel’s work celebrates the concept of the Grotesque and the attribution of human traits, emotions, or intentions to non-human entities and objects. His large-scale sculptural pieces are characterised by bizarre distortions, especially in the exaggerated or abnormal depiction of human figures. His work commands a charged expression of the surreal and absurd to represent an emotional state that one could be in.

Inspired by nature, art history and the materiality of the clay, Oriel is constantly developing and reinventing his unique style and approach towards ceramics. His sculptural objects explore the relationship between the artistic act and the fluidity of emotion. His work aims to embody the characteristics of the creative process: an open-ended journey where the final piece is not preconceived but the result of a series of unpremeditated actions.
