Exploring Doublecloth Workshop
Exploring Doublecloth is a 2-day workshop that is suitable for intermediate or advanced level weavers. Taught by Charlotte Grierson at Cockpit, Deptford, this session aims to build your understanding and confidence so that you can go on to use doublecloth in many ways in your weaving. During the two days, we will cover the breadth of the possibilities of this structure.
Doublecloth as the name suggests is a fabric made up of two layers of cloth. There are different ways of achieving this as well as a large range of effects that can be created. In Exploring Doublecloth Workshop you will learn a broad range of approaches, comparing the possibilities and understanding the different set-ups and planning required for each. You will weave samples on 8 shaft looms plus one option on a 16 shaft loom.
You will learn:
- tubular cloth
- double width cloth
- stitched doublecloth
- horizontal and vertical tubes
- solid colours and blended colours
Working on looms set up with a range of different warps, threadings and materials, you will be able to weave samples and try a range of possibilities with doublecloth. You will have supporting handouts to explain and help develop your understanding, building your confidence to explore and experiment with a wide range of wefts.
To conclude the workshop we will evaluate the range of samples you have woven and also identify the characteristics and opportunities of doublecloth, together with the things you need to consider.

Charlotte Grierson has an MA in Textiles and is a handweaver with 30 years of experience. She designs and makes functional as well as art-led work from her studio at Cockpit in Deptford. She also has over 20 years of experience of teaching practical weaving classes.

Times: 10am-4pm each day.
All materials are provided.
Spring Cafe serves vegetarian food and is based at Cockpit Deptford and will be open during this workshop.
