Weaving

About

Carolina is a Peruvian textile artist and researcher based in London who explores culture as a subject through material practices. One example of this exploration is textiles, which they use as sensory interfaces linking culture, technology, and nature. She understands the knowledge of traditional techniques as a form of technology, a technology that does not conceive the overexploitation of natural resources and materials but instead promotes responsible use and sustainable production.

Process

Carolina's process encompasses weaving and making as two sides of the same coin, working across textiles (natural fibres), sculpture, and wearables (wire and copper sticks), while testing materials such as human hair, bells, and dry seeds. The results are textile sculptures conceived as collectable objects; some have been integrated into complex installations, while others function as interactive sculptures. Throughout this work, she focuses on the tactile effect as a powerful sensory medium, exploring scale, textures, colours, natural fibres, and metallic wires.
