Meet the Maker: Caitlin Maxwell Hughan

30.08.25

Welcome to Meet the Maker, a new video series where we take you behind the scenes with talented Cockpit makers in their studios.

Today we’re taking you behind-the-scenes with Caitlin Maxwell Hughan, a dyer working with yarn, whose practice focuses on strengthening farm-to-fibre connections by bridging the gap between farmers, manufacturers, and designers.

Caitlin uses deadstock yarn and minimal dye in her work, and incorporates colour from locally sourced, traceable materials — often natural, plant-based sources — with a focus on sustainability and low-impact practices. In addition to her research work, she also provides colour sampling and dye services and teaches workshops on yarn dyeing, hank making, and natural dyeing.

In this video, we take you behind the scenes in Caitlin’s studio to learn about her unique practice, the magic of natural dyeing, and how sometimes it’s the ‘scary parts’ that spark the most inspiration.

Be sure to follow Caitlin on Instagram and pop by her studio at Winter Open Studios this December.
