Exploring Doublecloth is a 2-day workshop taught by Charlotte Grierson at Cockpit Deptford. This workshop is suitable for intermediate level weavers, who want to learn a variety of possibilities offered by this structure, aiming to build your understanding and confidence so that you can go on to use doublecloth in may ways in your weaving.
Doublecloth as the name suggests is a fabric made up of two layers of cloth. There are different ways of achieving this and a large range of effects that can be created. Exploring doublecloth will cover a broad range of approaches; comparing the possibilities and understanding the different set-ups and planning required for each. This workshop is based on structures that are achievable on 8 shafts, and additionally a 16 shaft.

During the workshop you will cover topics such as:
- tubular cloth
- double width cloth
- stitched doublecloth
- horizontal and vertical tubes
- ratios
- solid colours and blended colours
- 3D techniques
Working on looms set up with a range of different warps, threadings and materials, you will be able to weave samples to try a range of possibilities with doublecloth. You will have supporting handouts to help and develop your understanding. You will build your confidence to explore and experiment with a wide range of wefts.
To conclude the workshop we will evaluate the range of samples you have woven and identify the characteristics and opportunities of doublecloth and what you need to consider.

- your own notes and paperwork
- samples you have woven.
Charlotte Grierson has an MA in Textiles and is a handweaver with over 20 years of experience. She designs and makes her own functional and art-led work from her studio at Cockpit in Deptford. She also has over 14 years of experience of teaching practical weaving classes.
