Event description

Marking the Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers’ inaugural participation in London Craft Week, which celebrates its 10th edition this year, The Gilded City brings together eleven artists working with the ancient art of gilding.

Set within the ornate Painters’ Hall, the exhibition offers a glimpse into the activities of the guild and the variety of skilled and boundary-pushing work being produced by the Freeman and Liverymen of fifth oldest of the 111 Livery Companies in the City of London.

Discover Golden Hurricane, a piece by Cockpit maker Elise Gustilo, alongside contemporary paintings and sculptures, experimental wallpaper, decorative craftwork, fine art framing, illumination and calligraphy.

Golden Hurricane is an experimental piece crafted from gilded golden lace – that is lace which has been sized and coated with delicate, Dutch gold metal leaf. Inspired by movement and theatre, Gustilo played with weaving the lace through millinery wire and attaching it to a base so that it bounced to dramatic effect as the wearer moves. Cutting, folding, and stitching the lace created a rich 3D texture and she crafted gigantic pearl raspberries to add to the playful opulence.

Golden Hurricane was originally created as a collaboration between couture milliner Gustilo and Decorative Artist Jo Mabbutt.
