Designing with Colour for Loom Weaving is a 3-day course taught by Charlotte Grierson for West Dean College in West Sussex. Set in the beautiful surroundings of the Jacobean House and Gardens, this course teaches how colours behave in weaving.
Covering basic colour theory, you will build your confidence in planning, helping you predicting how colours interact in your cloth. During the course you will weave your own samples on a set of pre-warped looms, in a range of materials. You will have the choice of a wide range of weft yarns of different thickness and qualities.
Charlotte will guide you through the use of different weave structures and how they can be used to effect colour in your weaving. You will produce some design work from inspiration sources to understand how colour can be used in the planning of a project. No previous drawing experience is needed for this.
Designing with Colour for Loom Weaving is suitable for all stages of students including early stage weavers. Charlotte will be able to support you with weave structures, if you have less experience of weaving.
The course you will cover:
- Using different yarns, their characteristics and how they affect colour in your weaving
- Scale – using different thicknesses in your warp and weft
- The relationship between warp and weft regarding colour
- Sett – the effect of spacing of your warp threads on colour
- Use of different weave structures and the role colour plays
Charlotte brings 15 years of teaching students at different levels and fosters an environment of encouragement and experimentation within the small group of students.
